Addressing the nation on International Yoga Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the world is looking at yoga as an agent of global good. The PM was scheduled to address the nations on the banks of the Dal Lake to celebrate the 10th International Yoga Day but due to rain the event was moved indoors.
The Prime Minister performed yoga in a 30-minute session. The programme is being held at Srinagar’s Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC). Around 3,000-4,000 people are expected to attend the event.
This year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Self and Society’, emphasises yoga’s vital role in fostering individual well-being and social harmony. It highlights the interconnectedness between individual and collective health.
Various locations
Over the years, PM Modi has led Yoga Day celebrations at various locations, including Delhi’s Kartavya Path, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi and Jabalpur. Last year, he led the events at the UN Headquarters in New York.
International Yoga Day is observed on June 21, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, an auspicious period in Indian tradition. The day serves as a platform to raise awareness about the multiple benefits of practising yoga.
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah is in Ahmedabad on Friday to participate in a yoga event at a park on Sindhu Bhavan Road in the morning. The event is part of the International Yoga Day celebrations, which are set to be held across the country.
The state-level Yoga Day event is being held at Nada Bet of Banaskantha on the Indo-Pak border.
On this day, various events and activities are being organised across the country, including mass yoga sessions, workshops and seminars.
Inception of the day
The inception of International Yoga Day traces back to September 27, 2014, when PM Modi proposed the idea during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly. He emphasised yoga’s ancient heritage and its potential to promote global health and peace.
Subsequently, on December 11, 2014, the UN proclaimed June 21 as International Yoga Day, supported by 177 member states, reflecting yoga’s universal appeal and acceptance.
Yoga is known for enhancing flexibility, strength, and endurance. Regular practice can prevent and manage various physical ailments, including back pain and cardiovascular issues.
Yoga aids in stress reduction, enhances concentration, and promotes mental clarity. Practices such as pranayama (breath control) and meditation are crucial for managing anxiety and depression.
Yoga guides individuals toward self-awareness and self-realisation. This spiritual aspect helps practitioners connect with themselves at a deeper level.
