A renowned Indian playback singer, film writer, and producer, Pamela Chopra, passed away this morning, April 20, at the age of 74. She was the wife of the legendary Bollywood filmmaker, Yash Chopra.
According to reports, she was admitted to Mumbai’s Lilavati hospital for the past 15 days and was put on a ventilator by doctors, but her health continued to deteriorate.
The Chopra family released a statement confirming her death and requesting privacy during this difficult time. Pamela’s cremation took place in Mumbai today at 11 a.m.
Pamela Chopra had made significant contributions to the Hindi film industry, working alongside her husband. She was last seen in the YRF documentary, The Romantics, where she spoke about Yash Chopra’s journey and their life together. On the show, Pamela shared how Yash would often reach out to her to understand the female perspective while making films.
Pamela Chopra and Yash Chopra married in 1970 in a traditional, arranged ceremony. They had two sons together, Aditya and Uday Chopra. Aditya is a film producer and director and Uday is an actor and film producer.
Pamela has sung several film songs, all of them for her husband’s films, from Kabhie Kabhie (1976) to Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (2002). She was also an independent producer for the 1993 film Aaina and co-wrote the script of her husband’s 1997 film Dil To Pagal Hai along with her husband, son, and professional writer Tanuja Chandra. Pamela even appeared on screen once, in the opening song Ek Duje Ke Vaaste of the film Dil To Pagal Hai, where she and Yash Chopra appeared together.
The Indian film industry mourns the loss of this multi-talented and versatile artist.
