X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has taken a firm stand against harmful content. The company’s monthly compliance report reveals that it has banned over 213,000 accounts in India alone, between February 26 and March 25.
The primary reasons for these bans were violations related to promoting child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity. A number of accounts were also banned for promoting terrorism on the platform.
During the specified period, a staggering 212,627 accounts were banned for their involvement in promoting illegal and harmful content. In addition, X took decisive action against 1,235 accounts found to be promoting terrorism on its platform in India.
The report stated, “There are many measures that have been in place for a long time on our platform that relate to the mitigation of child sexual exploitation and terrorism activity. X does not tolerate any material that features or promotes child sexual exploitation. This includes media, text, illustrations, or computer-generated images.”
As concerns over the proliferation of harmful content online continue to grow, platforms like X are intensifying efforts to combat such activities and maintain a conducive environment for healthy discourse. In response to user complaints, X reported receiving 5,158 grievances from users in India during the same reporting period. This highlights the platform’s initiative to address user concerns promptly and effectively through its grievance redressal mechanisms.
The report further stated, “We processed 86 grievances which were appealing account suspensions. These were all resolved and the appropriate responses were sent. We overturned 7 of these account suspensions after reviewing the specifics of the situation. The remaining reported accounts remain suspended.”
While the majority of reported accounts remained suspended, the company acknowledged overturning suspensions for seven accounts after reviewing specific circumstances. However, it maintained the suspension of the remaining reported accounts in line with its policies and guidelines. Additionally, X received 29 requests related to general account inquiries during the reporting period, indicating the platform’s active engagement with users on various issues. This underscores X’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful platform for all users.
