Anthony Fauci has made some serious remarks regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, insisting that even though many countries have lifted restrictions, the world was still in a pandemic. He said that no one should be under the misconception that the pandemic has ended, as many nations were still seeing surge in number of cases from time to time. If his comments are anything to go by, this is still too soon for the countries to relax and believe that pandemic is moving towards the end.
Fauci’s comments come at a time where many governments, including the U.S., are working on keeping the number of cases on the low and efficiently manage hospitals and other medical facilities. Much of the world today is trying to see how best their people can live with the virus, which has the ability to mutate fast and is unpredictable.
Speaking about the U.S., the country’s top infectious disease specialist, said that at least for the U.S., the worst seems to have passed and it seems that Coronavirus is becoming an ‘endemic’ disease, meaning something that will be constantly present in some areas. Clarifying his statements, Fauci told The Washington Post, that he was talking about the full-blown explosive pandemic phase where there were hundreds of thousands of cases reported each day. Coronovirus in the U.S. is transitioning from that phase towards being an endemic. “The world is still in a pandemic. There’s no doubt about that. Don’t anybody get any misinterpretation of that. We are still experiencing a pandemic,” Fauci said.
As such, the U.S. government has said that it had expanded its tools and the country was better equipped to handle contagious hospitalizations, especially for Coronavirus. The country believes that it has more vaccinations and medications as well as efficient facilities, as compared to what they had at the start of the pandemic.
