Half of the human race usually feel neglected in the patriarchal society that we live in. Women’s day is marked on the eighth of March. For the first time, it was celebrated in the year 1911. This day is celebrated for the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and to raise awareness about the equality of women.
Why Do We Celebrate Women’s Day?
The motive behind celebrating women’s day is to pass the message of gender equality and to build a better society where there is no gender bias.

Gaura Devi:
Gaura Devi led the Chipko Movement or Andolan in the Raini village of Uttarakhand. The Chipko Movement, aimed at protecting trees and forests where many women from rural areas participated to save the tress from government-backed logging. This movement would not have been possible without her contribution.
Shakuntala Devi:
Shakuntala Devi is known as the ‘Human Computer’. She was an Indian Mathematician, Writer and Mental Calculator. She earned a place in the Guinness book of the world record in its 1982 edition. There is also a biographical film starred by Vidya Balan about her life.
Irom Sharmila:
Irom Sharmila is known as the Iron Lady of Manipur as she was on a hunger strike for 16 years against the Armed Forces Act (The act provides special authority to Armed Forces in disturbed areas). She is an Indian civil rights activist, political activist and even a popular poet.
Mary Kom:
Mary Kom is an Indian Amateur Boxer, Politician and an Incumbent Member Of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. She is the only woman who has won medals at eight different world championship tournaments.
Arunima Sinha:
Arunima Sinha is the world’s first woman Amputee to scale Mount Everest, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Elbrus, Mount Kosciuszko, Mount Aconcagua, Carstensz Pyramid and Mount Vinson. She is a mountain climber and a sportswoman.
Saalumarada Thimmakka:
Saalumarada Thimmakka known as Aala Marada Thimmakka is an Indian environmentalist from Karnataka. She had planted around 385 banyan trees at a stretch of four kilometres at a highway from Hulikal and Kudur.
Neerja Bhanot:
Neerja Bhanot was an Indian chief flight attendant who died to save passengers on Pam Am flight 73 which was hijacked by terrorists during a stop in Karachi, Pakistan just two days before her 23rd birthday.
Kiran Bedi:
Kiran Bedi is the first woman to join the officer ranks of the IPS. She is also a social activist and a tennis player.
Indra Nooyi:
Indra Nooyi is an Indian-American business executive and former chairman and chief executive officer of PepsiCo. She joined the board of Amazon in 2019. She had ranked 91 on the Forbes list of ‘America’s Richest Self Made Women’.
Dr Tessy Thomas:
Dr Tessy Thomas is an Indian scientist and Director-General of aeronautical systems. She was the former project director for Agni-IV missile at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) which made her the first woman scientist to head a missile project.
