Wildlife enthusiasts have an exciting new lion sighting destination this Diwali, as the forest department is set to launch a jungle safari at Barda Sanctuary in Porbandar district before the festival.
Nityanand Srivastava, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), told a section of the media, “We will soon start the jungle safari at Barda. It is designed along the lines of Sasan, where tourists will be taken into the wild in an open jeep, providing a completely new experience for wildlife lovers.”
Barda Sanctuary serves as a lion corridor, and the department anticipates that lions will soon establish this area as their new habitat. To facilitate their relocation, a breeding centre for herbivores such as sambar and spotted deer has been set up to enhance the prey base. Recently, one lion wandered into the sanctuary on its own, while five others were introduced from breeding pools, resulting in the birth of two cubs. The presence of herbivores like sambar and spotted deer is also expected to attract tourists.
The forest department plans to operate four vehicles during the morning and evening slots, utilising a 15 km stretch for the safari.
Due to heavy rains in Porbandar, the safari will initially be limited to a 5 km length. Tourists can first book safaris in person at the forest department office in Porbandar, with online booking options expected to be available soon.
Aaradhna Sahu, Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife Circle) in Junagadh, remarked, “This will help alleviate the pressure on Sasan and Devaliya. Many tourists visit, and all slots are typically booked two to three months in advance during the festive season. Porbandar is a unique district with a beautiful sanctuary and rich biodiversity that will attract wildlife enthusiasts.”
The Wildlife Institute of India has identified Barda Sanctuary as a potential habitat for lions, estimating it can accommodate around 40 animals. Sasan attracts approximately 600,000 tourists annually, including international visitors, based on rough estimates.
According to sources, they are currently awaiting confirmation of the inauguration date from the Chief Minister’s office.
