Gujarat Foundation Day, also called Gujarat Sthapana Diwas, is celebrated every year on May 1 to commemorate the formation of the state in 1960. It marks the culmination of a long struggle for a separate state based on Gujarati language and cultural identity.
Earlier, Gujarat was part of the Bombay State, which had present-day Maharashtra and Gujarat. Both Maharashtra and Gujarat became independent states after the government passed the Bombay Reorganization Act in 1960. The two states were formed on the basis of language.
Gujarat is India’s fifth-largest state. It shares its border with Pakistan on the northeast side. Gujarat has several UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Champaner Pavagadh, Rani ni Vav, Dholavira and more. The historic walled city of Ahmedabad was included in UNESCO’s World Heritage City list in 2017.
The state has played a pioneering role in the country’s economic development, and it was previously known as the ‘Jewel of Western India’ due to its economic prosperity.
Many of India’s freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Abbas Tyabji and others were born in Gujarat.
