German filmmaker Wim Wenders on Saturday visited the residence of Satyajit Ray in Kolkata as part of his month-long, five-city India tour, King of the Road – India Tour. The visit was highlighted by the Film Heritage Foundation (FHF), which shared a series of images on Instagram.
During his visit, Wenders met Satyajit Ray’s son, Sandip Ray, and veteran Bengali actress Madhabi Mukherjee, who starred in several of Ray’s films, including Mahanagar (1963), Charulata (1964), and Kapurush (1965). The FHF post described the occasion as a tribute to Ray’s lasting cinematic legacy and a demonstration of the unifying power of cinema.
FHF Director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, who accompanied Wenders, later shared on X that Sandip Ray had discovered a letter that Wenders had written to Satyajit Ray.
Details of the letter’s contents were not disclosed.
Wenders’ tour began on February 16, in Kolkata with a special screening of his film Paris, Texas (1984) at Nandan. The tour will conclude on Sunday, with screenings of a total of 18 of his films, including feature films, short films, and documentaries.
The India tour has been organised by the Film Heritage Foundation in collaboration with Wim Wenders Stiftung (Wim Wenders Foundation) and Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan.
