Pune, Jan 11, 2024: Forget diamond dazzle, it’s the golden yolk that’s shining bright and burning holes in pockets across India. Egg prices have soared to record highs, with Pune joining Kolkata as the most expensive cities for the humble breakfast staple.
In Pune, a single egg’s wholesale price has hit a record Rs 6.44, translating to retail prices between Rs 7 and Rs 7.50. Other major cities haven’t escaped the scorching trend either, with Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vizag witnessing prices above the usual Rs 6.10 mark.
What’s scrambling this omelet-lover’s paradise? Industry experts point to a sharp 10-15% decline in egg production. Many “layer companies,” those responsible for egg manufacture, have shut down or reduced operations due to sustained losses.
General Manager of a hatcheries said that “Drought in southern India and soaring feed costs have driven many poultry farmers out of the business. Replacing hens takes time, as they’re raised for 42-45 days before laying eggs for 18 months. This production lag means higher prices are likely to stay for a while.”
The news comes as a bitter pill, especially with winter’s onset typically driving up egg consumption. So, what’s an egg-lover to do? Perhaps explore alternative protein sources, embrace smaller portions, or hope for a quick turnaround in production. Until then, it seems, the golden yolk will remain a precious commodity.
