Rajkot, February 14: BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed Rohit Sharma as India’s captain for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, silencing any doubts about his leadership. Speaking to reporters, Shah explained the reasoning behind the decision, highlighting Rohit’s experience and leadership potential.
The announcement comes after speculation arose following Hardik Pandya’s return to Mumbai Indians captaincy. However, Shah clarified that Rohit remains the “all-format captain,” with Hardik serving as his deputy.
“In T20Is, Hardik will definitely be the vice-captain,” Shah stated. “But the question is, what if Hardik gets injured during the World Cup? Who takes over the captaincy then?”
He pointed to Rohit’s recent performance as evidence of his leadership qualities. “Against Afghanistan, when we were struggling at 22/4, Rohit Sharma came out and smashed a brilliant 121 runs. This shows his ability and leadership qualities. Do you still have any doubts about his captaincy?”
This announcement confirms Rohit’s second stint leading India in the T20 World Cup, following his semi-final finish in 2022. With the tournament set for June in the West Indies and USA, India hopes to finally lift the trophy under Rohit’s guidance.
