Doctors of the Indian Medical Association went on a strike on July 22 because the concerned authorities rejected any claims of an understanding of the issue. Medical Association called for a ‘Gujarat Bandh’ on Friday.
The Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court gave a verbal order to Gujarat Government to execute conditions. Thus, AMC stepped up on the provisions, including shifting ICUs on the ground floor and removing glass facades.
From the beginning of the COVID-19 era, there have been multiple clashes between the Medical Association and Government. AMC (Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation), the civic authority, asked the hospitals to implement the necessary modifications within a week.
As we took a deeper dive into the protest matter, Team VOI tapped in with a few doctors from IMA.
Dr Keyur Shah, the former Vice President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), said, “ICUs on the ground floor will invite more problems and infections to the patients, no matter the hospital size, large or small. According to medical experts, ICUs should be in isolated places. We also don’t want our patients to suffer because of doctors, the people responsible for making their health better. They come to us with the hope of their well-being.”
Dr Jitubhai Patel, the former National President of IMA, told VOI, “ICUs cannot be on the ground floor. It’s not scientifically correct. It’s also against the international standards of medical care. Moreover, various health hazard problems can occur due to this.” Patel added, “We are against the notice issued by the Gujarat HC and AMC. We will protest against it for the people until they do not take the order back.”
