Virat Kohli Prepares For Ranji Trophy Return After 12-Year Absence

| Updated: January 28, 2025 16:32

India’s star batter, Virat Kohli, joined Delhi’s Ranji Trophy squad for a team training session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday, ahead of his much-anticipated return to domestic cricket. Kohli will make his first appearance in the Ranji Trophy since 2012 when Delhi faces Railways on January 30.

This marks his return to the tournament after more than a decade, with his last outing against Uttar Pradesh in 2012.

Kohli arrived at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday morning and began his session with a group hurdle and a discussion led by Delhi’s head coach, Sarandeep Singh.

The 36-year-old participated in several group running drills and warm-up exercises, and even engaged in a 15-minute football session with his Delhi teammates.

Following this, Kohli spent 45 minutes practising his batting, facing a combination of five pace bowlers (three right-arm and two left-arm) and two left-arm spinners. He also took part in fielding throw-downs alongside his teammates.

The anticipation surrounding Kohli’s participation has sparked widespread excitement within the Indian cricket community, especially as the domestic circuit sees the return of other prominent players such as India captain Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

This comes in line with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s renewed emphasis on domestic performances as a crucial factor in international selection.

Kohli had missed Delhi’s previous match against Saurashtra due to a neck injury but is eager to make a strong impact in the upcoming game. His return to form is crucial, particularly after enduring a lean patch in Test cricket, including struggles during India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy series defeat to Australia.

Despite the heightened interest in Kohli’s return, there is no confirmation yet regarding live telecast or streaming of the match.

However, the BCCI has ensured additional security measures at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, acknowledging the star value Kohli brings to the fixture.

The match against Railways on January 30 has gained attention, with Kohli aiming to regain his rhythm and confidence after his recent challenges in Test cricket.

As the game approaches, all eyes will be on Kohli as he looks to make a memorable return to his roots and help Delhi secure a strong finish in the Ranji Trophy group stage.
