Vijay Diwas 2024: India Honours 1971 Victory Over Pak, Liberation of Bangladesh

| Updated: December 16, 2024 14:08

Every year on December 16, India celebrates Vijay Diwas, a day that celebrates its historic victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which also led to the liberation of Bangladesh.

This day holds a special place in Indian history as the nation pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of its armed forces, who played a pivotal role in the decisive victory.

The Indo-Pak war of 1971 began on December 3 and lasted for 13 days, culminating in one of the most significant military events of the 20th century. The conflict arose due to the humanitarian crisis in East Pakistan, where the Pakistani military unleashed a brutal campaign against the civilian population.

India intervened to support the people of East Pakistan in their struggle for independence. On December 16, 1971, Pakistani General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93,000 Pakistani troops, formally surrendered to the joint forces of India and the Mukti Bahini in Dhaka.

This surrender marked the largest military capitulation since World War II and resulted in the creation of Bangladesh, a new sovereign nation.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and military icons like Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and Lt. General Jagjit Singh Aurora, India demonstrated exceptional strategic and military excellence.

The war came at a cost, with approximately 3,900 Indian soldiers losing their lives and hundreds more sustaining injuries. However, the victory not only established India as a regional power but also stood as a testament to the country’s commitment to defending justice and human rights.

The observance of Vijay Diwas carries profound significance:

  • Commemoration of Sacrifice:
The day honours the courage, resilience, and ultimate sacrifice of Indian soldiers who fought valiantly during the war.
  • Symbol of Freedom:
Vijay Diwas is a reminder of the liberation of Bangladesh and the end of oppression under the Pakistani military.
  • Fostering National Pride:
The celebration fosters unity and instils a deep sense of patriotism among Indian citizens. It serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of defending the nation’s freedom and sovereignty.

As the nation celebrates Vijay Diwas in 2024, it not only reflects on its historical victory but also remembers the sacrifices made by its armed forces.
