Today, several Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) members flocked P P Savani School, Hirabaug, in Surat, protesting against burqa-clad students. The situation did not get out of hand as the police rushed to the spot. Although the police detained 12 VHP leaders, they were soon released.
The incident took place, as a group of students wearing the burqa reached the school to participate in the talent search test (TST) organized by the education department. The test was scheduled from 9:00. It is believed that the local residents saw the burqa-clad students and many started to protest. Just then the VHP leaders also joined in the protests.
The leaders also met with the school principal to advocate ban on burqa. Nilesh Akbari, vice president of VHP Surat, said that they did not cause any problems and had talked with the principal regarding their concerns.
