Aditya Srivastava, 2023’s topper in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services mains exam was working in Goldman Sachs in Bengaluru. He quit the high-paying job to pursue a career in the civil services. He is an electrical engineering graduate from IIT Kanpur.
In 2019, Srivastava began his professional journey with Goldman Sachs, one of the world’s leading investment banks. However, he had a deep desire to serve the nation through the civil services. So, Srivastava devoted himself entirely to preparing for the UPSC exams by quitting his job and returning to his hometown after 15 months with Goldman Sachs.
Learning techniques
He did not go for traditional preparatory methods but relied on previous years’ questions. He took up mock tests and interviews. Srivastava stressed the overwhelming importance of strategic preparation, which essentially means making a distinction between smart work and hard work.
Despite setbacks, including failure during the preliminary stage in 2021, Srivastava continued to pursue his dream. In fact, he learnt a great deal from failure. In 2022, he managed to obtain 236th rank in his second attempt. He applied again in 2023 and made it right to the top!
Animesh Pradhan is the second rank holder and Donuru Ananya Reddy secured the third rank. The UPSC exam qualifiers will occupy crucial positions in various government services including the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service and Central Services Group A and Group B.
