Rajkot, Gujarat: While the unexpected downpour brought a reprieve from the scorching heat in Saurashtra on Saturday, it also caused waterlogging in towns and raised concerns for farmers.
The sudden change in weather caught residents off guard, with many having already switched to air conditioners in anticipation of summer. The heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds, forced people to pull out their winter clothes again.
The unseasonal showers affected districts like Devbhumi Dwarka, Junagadh, Rajkot, and Kutch. While offering temporary relief from the heat, the rain poses a threat to crops like wheat, onions, and even mangoes. Farmers expressed concerns about potential damage to their Rabi harvest.
Rajkot city witnessed waterlogged roads and disrupted morning traffic due to the downpour. Anjar in Kutch received the highest rainfall (35mm) between 6 AM and 8 AM, followed by Dhanera (28mm) and Bhabhar (21mm) in Banaskantha district.
Ahmedabad also experienced rain and strong winds, leading to waterlogging on roads and underpasses in the afternoon.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the unseasonal weather to a low-pressure area over southwest Rajasthan and neighboring areas in Pakistan. They forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers in various districts of Gujarat on Sunday.
