Unseasonal rainfall has wreaked havoc in the western Indian state of Gujarat, claiming the lives of at least 20 people and disrupting normal life across the region. The torrential downpours, accompanied by lightning strikes, hit several districts on Sunday, causing widespread damage to crops and infrastructure.
According to officials from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), lightning strikes were the primary cause of the fatalities. The worst-affected districts include Dahod, Bharuch, Tapi, and Amreli, where multiple deaths have been reported.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed condolences for the loss of life and assured that the local administration is providing relief and assistance to those affected by the severe weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a respite from the rains on Monday. However, officials have warned that some parts of south Gujarat and Saurashtra districts may still experience showers.
The unseasonal rainfall has also caused significant damage to the ceramic industry in Morbi district, as factories have been forced to shut down due to waterlogging.
Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the monsoon season continues to linger in Gujarat.
