Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, along with Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Mansukh Mandaviya, visited Lothal to review the progress of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC). The complex aims to celebrate the state’s ancient maritime heritage while integrating modern developments.
NMHC is built under the concept of ‘Virasat Bhi Vikas Bhi’. Phase 1A of the NMHC is under construction and is 65 per cent completed. This phase focuses on the development of the museum and six galleries that will feature exhibits such as naval warships, including INS Nishank, Sea Harrier aircraft and UH3 helicopters.
The Union Ministers conducted an on-site inspection of the project, which is being developed by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways under the Sagarmala Programme.
The project is designed to showcase India’s maritime legacy, from ancient to modern times, through innovative “edutainment” approaches that use advanced technology to spread awareness and attract international tourists.
During the visit, the Ministers toured key landmarks such as INS Nishank, the Lothal Jetty Walkway and the Museum Block, interacting with onsite workers and gaining insights into the challenges faced during construction.
Emphasising the project’s impact, Sonowal said, “We are committed to ensuring that the NMHC is completed on time and to the highest standards. This project will boost tourism, provide a platform for maritime education and foster collaboration between India’s maritime community and the global industry. It is a crucial step toward making India a leading maritime nation.”
Sonowal expressed satisfaction with the milestones achieved in civil infrastructure development, noting that “the project is progressing as per schedule.”
Lothal, a prominent city of the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation, holds historical importance due to its dockyard, trade and bead-making industry.
Sonowal also highlighted the socio-economic benefits of the project, stating, “This project will create employment, foster skill development and empower the youth of Gujarat. The NMHC is a project of national importance, offering tremendous opportunities for growth and learning in the maritime sector.”
Senior officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Ministry of Defence (Navy and Coast Guard), the Government of Gujarat, renowned architect Hafeez Contractor and Tata Projects Ltd were also part of the review.
