A 22-year-old undertrial prisoner, Khushal Jadhav, was found dead in his cell at Sabarmati Central Jail on Tuesday afternoon. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, with contrasting claims emerging from the family and law enforcement.
Jadhav, originally from Lakhtar in Surendranagar district and residing in Amraiwadi, was under arrest for three years, accused of killing a colleague in Amraiwadi over a petty dispute in 2020.
While police claim Jadhav committed suicide by hanging, his family strongly refutes this possibility. “We received a call from the jail authorities informing us of his death by hanging. We cannot believe he committed suicide because he had three other inmates with him,” stated Hitesh Rathod, a relative of Jadhav. “We suspect foul play, either by fellow inmates or by the guards.”
Rathod further added that the family has refused to claim the body unless a murder complaint is registered. Jadhav’s body has been sent to Asarwa Civil Hospital for a postmortem, and the investigation is ongoing.
