The highlights of the third day of the first Sherpa Meeting of India’s G-20 Presidency, which is taking place in Udaipur, Rajasthan, included substantive discussions on important global issues like inclusive growth, multilateralism, and women-led development, as well as the 3Fs (Food, Fuel, and Fertilizer), tourism, and culture. The Sherpa meeting in Udaipur’s five substantive sessions came to an end today.
Amitabh Kant, the G20 Sherpa for India, opened the conversation by outlining the country’s priorities within the G20’s six Working Groups on agriculture, trade and investment, employment, anti-corruption, tourism, and culture as well as measures to improve collaboration in these areas.
He emphasised the need for transformational initiatives in employment, commerce, agriculture, and the fight against corruption and financial crimes. Delegates stressed the significance of achieving resilient growth through long-term solutions and significant collaborations during discussions on the global barriers to economic growth. Regarding the extensive list of goals outlined by India, Mr. Kant expressed gratitude for the cooperation shown by the delegations.
The fourth session stressed on the need for multilateral reforms and building institutions that are better able to capture the needs and ambitions and reflect the priorities of all regions and countries across the globe and address the challenges of the day.
Strengthening and enhancing the mandate and resources of Multilateral Development Banks, reforming the WTO, the importance of Green Hydrogen in achieving green energy transition including for hard-to-abate sectors, and reformed multilateralism for greater peace and harmony, were some of the major areas of discussion.
Session five discussions focused around Women-led Development, and the need to have women at the forefront of development. The interventions in the session drew attention to critical priorities such as reducing gender gaps, enhancing the capacity of women through education and skilling, promoting women in leadership roles, and boosting female labour force participation. Leveraging the tourism sector to accelerate progress towards SDG achievement, and protection, promotion, and preservation of culture, as also restitution of cultural properties, were the other areas covered in the session.
The G20 Sherpas and the delegations were given a tour of the renowned crafts village of Shilpgram following the deliberations. Its architecture and the variety of Rajasthani arts and crafts on display enthralled the visitors. The historic Manek Chowk in Udaipur hosted an evening musical performance for the delegations that was bright and colourful.
