According to Japan’s health ministry, as many as two people died in Japan after taking Moderna COVID-19 vaccine jabs. The vaccine administered to the deceased were among the batches which were later suspended over contamination reports.
Within the days of getting their second jab of Moderna vaccine, both the men in their 30s, lost their lives, said the Reuters report quoting the ministry statement. Both of them, received the dose from one of the three manufacturing lots of the vaccines that were suspended on Thursday over contamination reports. The deaths of the deceased are being probed, added the report. They had a fever the next day after receiving the second dose and died two days following the fever. This came after Japan suspended the use of total 1.63 million doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. Over a week after the domestic distributor, Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. got reports of contamination in some of the vials, the actions were taken.
However, the US based biotechnology and pharmaceutical firm said that the contamination could have been possibly due to a manufacturing issue in one of the production lines at its contract-based manufacturing site in Spain. Both Takeda and Moderna insisted on following a formal investigation to get the link.
