Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress party, cites Mahatma Gandhi following his conviction in a 2019 case.
“My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my god and non-violence is the means to attain godhead,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.
In a criminal defamation case brought against him in 2019 due to comments he made against the Modi surname, a court in Surat today convicted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to two years in prison.
According to Gandhi’s lawyer, Babu Mangukiya, the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma, which found Gandhi guilty under sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code, also granted him bail and stayed the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court.
The Representation of the People Act states that a person who receives a sentence of two years or more in prison is unable to run for office “from the date of such conviction” and for a further six years after serving the sentence. Gandhi was in court when the verdict was pronounced.
