Former US President Donald Trump was found guilty by a jury on all 34 felony counts in a criminal trial at New York State Supreme Court.
A New York jury convicted Trump on all 34 charges in the ‘hush money’ case, where he is charged with falsifying business records, on Thursday in a major development less than five months before the US elections where he seeks to recapture power.
The judge has set the sentencing for July 11, just days before Republicans are set to select him as their 2024 nominee. Reacting to the jury verdict, Trump called it a “disgrace”.
No bar on campaigning
The verdict makes Trump the first criminally convicted former US President but does not prevent him from campaigning for another term. In fact, he could still vote for himself if he is not in prison on election day.
The verdict exposes him to potential prison time in the city where his manipulation of the tabloid press helped him become a reality TV star from a real estate tycoon, and finally the US president.
Supporters of Trump, enraged by his conviction, flooded pro-Trump websites with calls for riots, revolution and violent retribution.
