The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced new regulations aimed at curbing the growing problem of fraudulent calls and SMS, set to come into effect on November 1. This initiative is expected to address the widespread nuisance and potential harm caused by unsolicited communications, which frequently inconvenience and put users at risk.
TRAI has directed all telecom operators to implement these measures strictly, meaning users may notice some changes when making calls. In recent years, misuse of mobile phones for malicious purposes has surged, with hackers often targeting unsuspecting users and even draining bank accounts. These new rules are designed to prevent such activities and safeguard the public.
The key feature of the initiative is the introduction of message traceability, which will allow authorities to investigate any anonymous or suspicious message a user receives. Specific keywords will help to identify spam calls and messages, and any communication flagged as spam or fake will be blocked immediately. Furthermore, users will have the option to file complaints against senders of such messages.
In response to the significant volume of spam calls that not only disrupt users but have also been linked to financial fraud and other criminal activities, TRAI is reinforcing its commitment to user safety with these measures. The new rules are poised to bring about a more secure communication environment from next month.
