A speeding car carrying five Indian-American students turned turtle in Alpharetta, Georgia on May 14. Three students lost their lives, while two others sustained injuries in the deadly crash. Authorities believe that speeding was a significant factor in the accident.
The victims, all 18 years old, were identified as Aryan Joshi, Sriya Avasarala and Anvi Sharma. Joshi, a senior at Alpharetta High School, was joined by Avasarala and Sharma, both first-year students at the University of Georgia. The injured students include Rithwak Somepalli, a Georgia State University student and the driver of the Honda Accord and Mohammed Liyakath, a senior at Alpharetta High School.
According to Alpharetta Police, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which ultimately flipped over and came to rest upside down in a tree line. Joshi and Avasarala were found dead at the scene, while Sharma, a rear passenger, later succumbed to her injuries at North Fulton Hospital.
The authorities are actively investigating the cause of the crash and preliminary data points to excessive speed as a contributing factor. Avasarala, a member of the UGA Shikaari dance team and Sharma, who sang with the UGA Kalakaar a cappella group, were beloved members of their respective organisations, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Joshi, a cricket enthusiast, was also a senior at Alpharetta High School.
The accident occurred on Westside Parkway, just north of Maxwell Road in Alpharetta, Georgia.
