The Madhya Pradesh government on Tuesday announced that the film ‘The Sabarmati Report’, based on the 2002 Godhra train burning incident, will be made tax-free in the state. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav shared the news and stated he intends to watch the film as well.
The tragic incident of February 27, 2002, when the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express was set on fire close to Godhra station in Gujarat, killing 59 Hindu pilgrims returning from Ayodhya, is the main subject of the film. A series of violent riots broke out in Gujarat that year as a result of this incident.
Speaking with reporters, Yadav said, “‘The Sabarmati Report‘ is a very good movie. I will go to watch the movie myself. I also told my ministers, MLAs and MPs to watch this film. We are also going to make it tax-free in the state so that maximum people can watch it.”
He claimed that the Godhra incident was a dark period of history and that the truth will be revealed in the movie. Yadav said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was Gujarat’s Chief Minister at the time, preserved the honour of the state and the nation while accusing the opposition of using the Godhra incident for “dirty politics” in order to get votes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commended the movie for telling the public the truth. He said in a post on X that it is beneficial for the truth to be revealed in a way that everyone can understand.
Prior to this, Home Minister Amit Shah had conveyed his sincere support for the film.
The Sabarmati Report, starring Vikrant Massey, Raashii Khanna and Ridhi Dogra, is presented by A Vikir Films and produced by Balaji Motion Pictures, an arm of Balaji Telefilms Ltd. The film, which was directed by Dheeraj Sarna, was produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ektaa R Kapoor, Amul V Mohan and Anshul Mohan.
The movie made an impressive Rs 2.62 crore on Saturday after opening with Rs 1.69 crore on Friday. On Sunday, it made Rs 3.74 crore, a significant 44% increase.
