Can you imagine, Penicillin, a wonder drug of the times, which is estimated to have save over a 100 million lives was invented out of a fortunate mistake on September 28, 1928 ? When Alexander Flemming woke up that day, he might not have any idea to revolutionize all medicine. In reality, it is what happened by discovery of the world’s first antibiotic, or bacteria killer.
Before leaving for a holiday to Suffolk, Fleming, he left inoculated staphylococci on culture plates in a corner of his laboratory. When he came back, he noticed a fungus that had killed the staphylococci which prompted him to start working on isolating the fungus.
Later, hard work and the brilliance of Dr. Chain and Dr. Florey for 12 years resulted in mass production.
