Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir: A 72-year-old retired police officer, Mohammad Shafi Mir, was shot dead by terrorists while giving the call to prayer (azaan) at a mosque in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday. The attack has sent shockwaves through the community and sparked outrage across the country. Mir, a respected figure in the area, was a former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) who had retired in 2012. He had become the local muezzin, the person who calls Muslims to prayer, and was known for his devotion to his faith and community. The attack occurred at the pre-dawn prayer time, as Mir was reciting the azaan through a loudspeaker. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and then silence. Mir’s last words, according to his cousin, were “reham” (mercy). Police have launched a search operation to nab the assailants. The area around the mosque has been cordoned off and a thorough investigation is underway.
The killing of Mir has been condemned by political leaders, religious figures, and members of the civil society. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the family and called the attack a “dastardly act of cowardice.” Mir’s death is a stark reminder of the ongoing violence in Kashmir, where even those dedicated to serving their community are not spared. It is a blow to the peace process and a call for renewed efforts to bring an end to the bloodshed.
