Surat’s Dumas Police arrested a 23-year-old man hailing from West Bengal on Wednesday night for smoking a cigarette in the lavatory of an Air India Express flight en route from Delhi to Surat.
The accused, identified as Kaustav Satyajit Bishwas, is an employee of a private company in Bengaluru. He was scheduled to board a connecting flight from Surat to Bengaluru. The incident came to light when a co-passenger alerted the crew about someone spending an unusually long time in the lavatory. Upon investigation, Bishwas emerged from the smoke-filled lavatory and confessed to smoking.
The pilot, upon landing at Surat International Airport around 9:45 pm, promptly alerted the airport staff about the incident. The airport authorities then escorted Bishwas to the terminal and informed the local police.
Acting on a complaint lodged by Shyam Kansara, the security supervisor of Air India Express, Bishwas was charged under IPC 336 and section 10 of The Aircraft Act, 1934. The police also seized a matchbox from Bishwas, possession of which is strictly prohibited on flights.
