Surat’s Pritesh Dave (37) is probably the last of its kind, a single parent of twins. Had he been late by a year, Dave would have been disqualified for surrogacy.
As infertility specialist Dr Parth Bavishi told a national daily, “According to the new rules, surrogacy is not allowed for single men, women, live-in and same-sex couples.”
Celebrities Karan Johar and Tusshar Kapoor became fathers through surrogacy.
Dave, who should celebrate Father’s Day with relish, had been without a job and consequently didn’t find a match. “I got lucky. A singleton like me cannot qualify for surrogacy now,” said Dave, proud father of twins, Dhairya and Divya.
A self-employed bachelor, he runs a Grahak Seva Kendra for a nationalised bank. His parents live in Surat.
Dave told the daily that many men in his community remain single since women prefer partners posted in government offices. “My parents were dejected when I could not win a girl’s hand in marriage. However, the
arrival of the twins has filled our house with joy,” said Dave who studied till Class XII.
“We have land and property, but that does not count. I may not have a life partner, but I have now a family for life. This is the biggest blessing,” he told the daily, acknowledging his mother’s support in raising the children.
