Surat: Man Fakes Car Theft To Escape Debt, Gets Caught By Police

| Updated: January 19, 2024 16:59

A man from Surat who had faked the theft of his car to pay off his debt was arrested by the Udhna police on Friday. The accused, Govardhan Rajput, had plotted with his friend Iqbal Pathan to steal his own car and claim insurance money.

Rajput had taken a top-up loan on his Swift Dezire car, which was worth Rs 4.5 lakh, but could not pay the instalments. He decided to get rid of the car and clear his debt by making it look like a theft. He made a duplicate key of his car and gave it to Pathan, who was supposed to steal the car on Jan 6 night. Rajput then left for his native place in Rajasthan to avoid suspicion.

However, his plan was foiled by the police, who received a complaint from his wife Kanchan Rajput on Jan 16. She said that her car was stolen outside her home in Gayatri Kurpa-2 society on Jan 6 night. The police inspector SN Desai started the investigation and checked the CCTV footage. He found some discrepancies in Rajput’s story and interrogated him. Rajput confessed to his crime and revealed the involvement of Pathan.

The police recovered the car from Rajput and arrested him. They are yet to arrest Pathan and his accomplice, who are absconding. Rajput has been booked for cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy.
