Born in Mississippi to Gujarati parents on December 20, 1983. the 38-year-old Suraj Patel is throwing a challenge to heavyweight democrats Jerrold Nadler and Carolyn Maloney for the primaries within Democrats to reach US congress from the newly-created 12th congressional district in Manhattan, New York City which covers the area of the northern end of Central Park.
A product of Stanford University (BA), Cambridge University (M. Phil) and New York University for Doctor of jurisprudence, Suraj Patel grew up in Indianapolis and the New York City area. He is a lawyer, professor, and politician.
Suraj Patel’s candidature for the 2022 US congressional elections was endorsed by environmental lawyer Steven Donziger and New York mayoral candidate Andrew Yang as well as journalist Matthew Yglesias.
Suraj Patel was part of the 2008 Obama Presidential Campaign as an organizer, and later figured in the advance team for the White House from 2008 to 2016. He was also part of the Obama entourage when the US President visited India.
Suraj Patel has roots in Bardoli, near Surat in Gujarat, India. He has already contested unsuccessfully in 2018 and 2020 against incumbent Representative Carolyn Maloney, a member of the House of Representatives for almost 30 years.
