When Ahmedabad Cops pursued to indict 50 students of LD Engineering College for a 1988 agitation at Gujarat University, the only witness available was a police constable.
However, the constable told the court that the department did not recruit him until then, and he was clueless about the case. Following his confession, he mentioned that he had been with the special branch for the last three years.
Therefore, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate RR Desai acquitted all 50 students facing charges several charges for three decades. They included rioting, unlawful assembly, causing harm to government servants, and damaging public property.
On March 29, 1988, students of LD college faced charges for vandalizing the lobby outside Vice-Chancellor Office in Gujarat University. Moreover, the students included inmates of the LD hostel that created a mess in GU Administrative Block. The Ahmedabad Police booked them under Sections 143, 147, 332, 427 of IPC. The cops also added the Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
