The Sri Lankan Navy on Sunday arrested 12 Indian fishermen and seized their trawler for allegedly engaging in poaching within its territorial waters.
With the most recent arrest, the total number of Indian nationals detained by the island nation in similar incidents this year has increased to 462.
According to a press release from the Sri Lankan Navy, the fishermen were apprehended and their trawler was seized off the coast of Point Pedro in the Jaffna northern province.
The 12 fishermen who were arrested were taken to Kankesanthurai Harbour and would be turned over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for further investigation.
In 2024, the Sri Lankan Navy has “held 62 Indian fishing boats and 462 Indian fishermen in island waters thus far and handed them over to authorities for legal action.”
