Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Tuesday expressed displeasure at a counsel who was persistent in requesting an early hearing. He said that he was ready to offer his seat to those who want to know how much pressure judges go through every day.
His remark came in response to a counsel’s request for an early hearing in the case involving Shiv Sena (UBT) against the Maharashtra Speaker’s refusal to disqualify MLAs from the Eknath Shinde group.
Though the matter was listed today, it was not taken up since the bench was hearing another part-heard matter. As the day’s proceedings began in the Chief Justice’s court, he announced that dates would be set for all cases, and a part-heard matter would continue, impacting 600 pending cases.
The counsel requested for an early hearing date, saying that the Maharashtra assembly elections are nearing. The Court granted time till next Thursday after the respondents sought time to prepare the compilation of documents. When the counsel sought an earlier date, saying that the compilation could be made in three days, CJI made the above remarks.
“Not to dictate to the court. Why don’t you come and sit here and tell the court master what dates you want? Ultimately, you see this is too much. You see the kind of pressure of work on the court’s time. If you like, come and sit here, please come and sit here. Sit for the day. I assure you, you will run for your life,” the Chief Minister told the lawyer, who was adamant for an early hearing in the case.”?
