Indian’s star athlete Neeraj Chopra has expressed shock that his competitor in Pakistan, Arshad Nadeem, is unable to procure a new javelin.
Nadeem had won the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham with a huge 90.18m throw. Also, he had bagged the bronze medal at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games where Chopra picked up the gold medal.
While Chopra, the world champion, and Nadeem are fierce rivals, they are known for their friendly banter off the field.
“It is hard to believe that he has been struggling to get a new javelin. Given his credentials, this should not be a big issue at all,” Chopra has said, according to media reports.
Nadeem recently expressed his frustration at not being able to procure an international-standard javelin for several years.
He said his javelin was damaged and he had asked the national federation and his coach to take action before the Paris Olympics.
Nadeem is a champion and javelin makers should be happy to sponsor him. He should be supported by his country’s government like I am being supported, Chopra reportedly said.
Chopra is supported by the Indian government’s Target Olympics Podium Scheme (TOPS).
