Supreme Court, today, has granted bail to Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in Sheena Bora murder case. Indrani had filed a application for bail in February, supported by her Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi. Sheena’s mother, Indrani has been in judicial custody of Special CBI court.
In her letter for bail, Indrani had claimed that an inmate in Byculla prison had told her that she had seen Sheena in Kashmir some time ago. Indrani has requested the CBI to investigate the matter that Sheen could be alive.
Sheena Bora murder case has garnered a lot of interest over the years, ever since the crime first came to light in 2015, especially with all the unexpected twists and turns. The case can be rather confusing to follow, primarily with the long list of people that have been named in connection to the murder. However, lets take a look at the some of the crucial points in case and understand the time-line.
What Happened?
Everything started when Indrani Mukerjea’s former driver Shyamvar Rai was arrested in 2015 in a completely different case. The crime came to light and upon investigation the police found that Mukerjae, along with her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna with the help of Rai, murdered Sheena in April 2012. It is believed that 24-year old Sheena was strangled to death in a car and her body was taken to the forest and burnt there.
Arrests
Indrani Mukerjea was arrested later, followed by her husband former media baron Peter Mukerjea. During her arrest, Mukerjea had maintained her statement that Sheena was alive and was studying in the US. However, 2016, after Sanjeev Khanna and the driver Rai confessed to the crime, Indrani broke down and admitted her role in Sheena’s death.
Nevertheless, Indrani has time and again claimed that Sheena is alive with no proof to back her statement, including in the latest bail plea. She has accused several people including Peter for abduction and disappearance of Sheena due to his greed.
Indrani spent four years in prison befor Bombay High Court granted her bail in 2020. during her confinement, she and Peter finalized their divorce and have separated ways.
Motive For The Murder
According to a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Indrani had been introducing Sheena as her sister rather than her daughter to everyone and one of them was Rahul Mukerjea, son of Peter Mukerjea from his first marriage. It is believed that Sheena and Rahul became closer and started an intimate relationship, which Indrani did not approve of.
Sheena and Indrani often got into spats about her relationship with Rahul. Aparently, Sheena started threatening Indrani of exposing her and tell everyone that they were actually mother-daughter.
Indrani was furious and could not tolerate this any more and conspired to kill Sheena along with her accomplices.
It is rather a scary thought that Indrani is still claiming that Sheena is alive and urging that the authorities look into the matter. As such, with Indian judicial system taking years to reach a conclusion, there is no end in sight for this case. It is only a wait-and-watch game for the people, hoping that whatever the matter proper justice is done.
