Member of INC (Indian National Congress) Shaktisinh Gohil has requested the centre in the parliament today, to consider the Kutchi language in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution.
He presented himself as a representative of all the people of Kutch who have been requesting the centre to include their language in the Constitution. He further emphasised how the Kutchi, the Indo-Aryan language, is spoken not only in Kutch but in several parts of East Africa, South African countries, England, America and many other countries of the world.
Stressing on the tourism aspect of Kutch, he said – Kutch is a district spread across 45,674 sq km area which is bigger than any state of any country. Dholaveera, the Harappan city is in Kutch. Moreover, people from all across the world come to visit the Great Rann of Kutch.
The Chairman, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu took Shaktisinh’s request into consideration and also asked him to speak a few words in the Kutchi language during the session.
The Eighth Schedule to the Constitution presently consists of 22 languages – Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Bodo, Santhali, Maithili and Dogri.
