Shahrukh Khan is one of the most successful and wealthy actors in Bollywood, with a net worth of US$750 million and a stunning mansion called Mannat, where he interacts with his fans from his balcony. But before he rose to fame and fortune, he lived in a simple flat in Bandra, a suburb of Mumbai, with his wife Gauri and their first son Aryan.
The flat, situated on the seventh floor of Shree Amrit Apartments, had a view of the sea and basic furnishings. The Khans bought it in 1997, when they moved from Delhi to Mumbai to pursue Shahrukh Khan’s acting dream. They also had a bookshelf full of books, showing their passion for reading.
In a 1997 interview with Simi Garewal, SRK revealed that he was not driven by money, but by his love for acting. He said he was nervous working with famous Bollywood stars, whom he had admired as a child. He also said he was aware that wealth could be fleeting, and that he valued his family more than anything.
In the modest abode of the now mega-wealthy film star, you’ll find humble household furnishings. In the dining area, boasting a picturesque view of the sea, rested a six-seater table adorned simply with a vase at its center. The cozy living room featured a modest black couch, complemented by a painting hanging behind it.
The flat was also the place where Khan and Gauri welcomed their first child, Aryan, who was born in 1997. A resident of the building said Khan used to drive a red Pajero and was friendly with his neighbours. The flat holds many special memories for the Khans, who now live in a sprawling mansion with their three children.
The flat was Khan’s first property in the city, and he reportedly regarded it as a lucky charm. He never sold it, but rented it out in 2013 for US$4,000, which was twice the average rent for the area at the time. According to a property dealer, the high price was due to Khan’s celebrity status, which attracted many inquiries from potential tenants.
