Selena Gomez Breaks Down in Tears Over Trump’s Deportation Announcement

| Updated: January 28, 2025 14:31

Hollywood fame Selena Gomez became emotional after former US President Donald Trump announced the deportation of illegal immigrants, breaking down in tears during an Instagram Stories video. In the clip, which was later deleted, the singer-actor, dressed in a black outfit, appeared to be at home as she recorded her message on Monday.

“I just wanted to say that I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked. The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise,” Gomez said in the video, visibly distressed.

Along with her message, she added the text “I’m sorry” and a Mexican flag.

Although the video was quickly deleted, a fan page on X (formerly Twitter) shared it. Many of Gomez’s followers expressed support for her emotional response, but the video also attracted criticism from some corners of the internet.

One user wrote, “It’s not Trump’s immigration law against Mexicans and Latinos. It is U.S. law against people that enter the country illegally.” Another comment read, “Selectively picking which immigration tragedy upsets you is performative.”

A further post said, “All her people? My people are fellow Americans, including those who came here from anywhere in the world, followed the rules, and swore an oath.”

In response to the backlash, Gomez shared another post on her Instagram Stories, stating, “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people.” However, like her previous message, this post was also deleted shortly after.

It is not the first time Gomez has addressed immigration issues. In 2019, she produced the Netflix documentary Living Undocumented, which highlights the struggles of eight undocumented families in the US during the Trump administration.
