In a shocking incident, a 25-year-old man smothered his five-month-old daughter to death outside Shardaben Hospital in Saraspur on Wednesday while his wife was undergoing sonography inside the hospital.
Shaherkotda police has registered a complaint of murder against the accused.
The accused, a scrap dealer living in Gomtipur, reportedly wanted a son. He blamed his daughter for negatively affecting his business. He also suspected the child was not his. The perpetrator was also angry that his wife was giving more time and attention to her daughter and not helping him in the scrap business, according to police sources.
According to the FIR, the couple got married in 2020 and had their first child, a daughter, on Sept 21, 2023. The accused allegedly began fighting with his wife, blaming her for giving birth to a daughter. In fact, he repeatedly threatened to kill the child.
The complainant stated that before the sonography she handed the baby to her husband. When she came out of the room half an hour later, she could not find her husband or child.
She immediately called her husband. The person who picked up the call asked her to come to the police table. There, she saw her husband and came to know that her child had been killed. She rushed to the paediatric department where she found her daughter lying dead, the FIR stated.
Police sources said the child was reportedly crying a lot and as the accused was unable to get her to stop, he smothered her. The child became unconscious or may have died immediately. The father took the infant outside and began splashing her face with water. Passersby, who saw this, grew suspicious and called the police control room. They handed over the man and the child to the police. The child was declared brought dead, the police added.
The complainant said the accused had attempted to smother the child earlier too when she was just two months old. At that time, she had rushed the child to a government hospital. She had approached the police but later had to compromise with her husband and did not lodge an FIR.
