The Supreme Court granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday. He has been granted bail till June 1 in connection with a money laundering case related to the excise policy scam.
The interim bail has been granted in order to enable Kejriwal to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, 2024. The elections in Delhi will take place on May 25.
The SC also said that Kejriwal would not be allowed to discharge any official duties as chief minister. As per the interim order, Kejriwal has to surrender on June 2.
The court rejected the request of senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal, to grant him interim bail until the declaration of election results on June 4.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader on March 21. Currently, he is in Tihar Jail and is under judicial custody.
The apex court had reserved its order on Kejriwal’s bail plea on May 7. On the same day, a Delhi court also extended his judicial custody till May 20.
BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa has said it is clear from the SC judgement that he has been granted bail for elections only and will have to go back to jail.
