Following the recommendation, the Centre will review the proposed names and make a decision. There is no specified time frame for the Centre to convey its decision.
The Supreme Court Collegium serves as a statutory and independent body responsible for recommending appointments, elevations, and transfers of judges to both the high courts and the apex court.
Typically consisting of three to five of the most senior judges, including the Chief Justice, the Collegium operates on the principle that the majority view prevails in case of differences of opinion.
The Collegium system was established as part of the constitutional mandate that requires consultation with the Chief Justice of India for judicial appointments. This mechanism ensures transparency and consensus in the appointment process.
