It was an interesting and amusing spectacle as 182 Gujarat MLAs gathered for the swearing-in on Monday. Eleven MLAs chose Sanskrit as their language to take oath, while two chose the national language Hindi. Another two MLAs took oath in the name of the Constitution instead of God.
As is the practice, the MLAs took oath in the name of Bhagwaan (God), but BJP’s Kalol MLA Fateh Singh Chauhan chose to be specific and took the oath in the name of Lord Ram. He also raised slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ in the Assembly. Similarly, Imran Khedawala took the oath in the name of Allah.
Meanwhile, Congress’ Jigesh Mevani, who won from Vadgam, and Kirit Singh took oath in the name of the Constitution of India.
The MLAs who chose Sanskrit as their language of choice were Darshita Shah, Darshana Deshmukh, Anirudh Dave, Aniket Thakar, Kirit Patel, Amit Thakar, Padyuman Waja, Shambhunath Tudia, Kanhaiyalal Kishori and Congress’ Arjun Modhwadia.
Dinesh Kushwaha, who won from Bapu Nagar, and Purnesh Modi, took oath in Hindi. All 156 BJP MLAs took oath in the Assembly, while 17 Congress MLAs and five Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs, along with three Independent MLAs also took oath. Pro-tem Speaker Yogesh Patel administered the oath to all the MLAs.
