Tuesday’s defeat in the women’s doubles first round of the Dubai Open, marked the end of Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza’s illustrious tennis career.
Sania Mirza and Madison Keys were defeated 6-4, 6-0 by Liudmila Samsonova and Veronika Kudermetova of Russia. Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna competed in the mixed doubles tournament at the Australian Open 2023 last month, where they came in second place.
Sania Mirza is one of the best tennis players to have come out of South Asia. She won six Grand Slam titles, including three doubles and three mixed doubles wins. Also, during her career, which started in 2003, she won 44 WTA titles.
She won 43 of her 44 WTA titles in doubles, and her most recent was at the Ostrava Open in 2021, where she teamed up with Zhang Shuai of China. In 2009, she partnered her countryman Mahesh Bhupati and won a mixed doubles match in Australia to earn her first Grand Slam victory. She also won the mixed doubles title with Bhupati at the 2012 French Open, as well as the mixed doubles gold with Bruno Soares of Brazil in the 2014 US Open.
Sania Mirza won the women’s doubles championships at the 2015 Wimbledon, 2015 US Open, and 2016 Australian Open with the legendary Martina Hingis. Sania Mirza holds the distinction of becoming the first Indian woman to win a Grand Slam and a WTA championship.
As she finished her final match and announced her retirement from tennis, there was a surge of emotion on Twitter as famous tennis players and celebrities congratulated her on a successful career.
