OpenAI announced today an agreement for Sam Altman’s return as CEO alongside a new board. “We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo,” the company stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Confirming the development, Sam Altman expressed his commitment, saying, “I love OpenAI, and everything I’ve done over the past few days has been in service of keeping this team and its mission together. I’m looking forward to returning to OpenAI and building on our strong partnership with MSFT (Microsoft).”
Altman gained prominence following the launch of ChatGPT last year, sparking an acceleration in AI research and development along with significant investments in the sector. His recent dismissal led to several high-profile departures from the company and reportedly spurred investors to push for his return.
Following Altman’s departure, OpenAI appointed Emmett Shear as interim CEO.
