RAJKOT, GUJARAT: Two women in a live-in relationship filed a police complaint in Rajkot on Wednesday, alleging they were assaulted by the brother of one of the partners over their disapproval of the relationship.
According to the complaint filed by Madhvi Vanaliya (24), she and her friend Radhika (identified only by first name) have been in a relationship for two years and wished to live together. However, Radhika’s family opposed the couple’s choice.
Vanaliya stated that in July 2023, they briefly resided together but faced pressure from Radhika’s family and eventually separated. Despite this, they continued their relationship and met regularly.
On January 8, while they were together near Bedi Chowkdi, they were allegedly accosted by Radhika’s brother, Vishal Nandesaniya. According to the complaint, Nandesaniya, a truck driver, forced them into his vehicle and drove them to his house. Vanaliya alleges that both women were then physically assaulted with sticks and pipes.
Radhika’s mother eventually intervened and took the injured women to a hospital. Vanaliya subsequently filed a police complaint against Nandesaniya under sections 323, 325, 341, and 506(2) of the Indian Penal Code, which pertain to causing hurt, causing grievous hurt, wrongful restraint, and criminal intimidation.
The police have confirmed receiving the complaint and are investigating the case. Nandesaniya is currently at large.
This incident highlights the challenges faced by individuals in non-traditional relationships, particularly in communities where such arrangements may be less accepted. While respecting cultural considerations, it is also important to recognize the right to personal autonomy and freedom from violence.
