A Russian beer brand, Rewort, has sparked a major controversy after allegedly featuring the image of Mahatma Gandhi on its beer cans. The outrage began when Suparno Satpathy, a socio-political leader from Odisha, shared images of the cans on social media, which quickly went viral.
Satpathy took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his concerns, urging Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and address the issue with Russian authorities.
“My humble request with PM @narendramodi ji is to take up this matter with his friend @KremlinRussia_E. It has been found that Russia’s Rewort is selling Beer in the name of Gandhiji,” he stated.
The controversy escalated further after a video surfaced on Instagram, showing two Indian men holding the Rewort beer cans.
Social media users were quick to condemn the brand, calling it ‘shocking’ and ‘unacceptable’. One commenter labelled it “an insult to India,” while others demanded action from the Indian government. The backlash included calls for legal measures, with one user suggesting the case should be brought before the International Court of Justice and that the issue be raised in Parliament for debate.
As the backlash continues to grow online, Rewort has yet to comment or provide an official response to the controversy.
The situation has sparked a wider conversation about cultural sensitivity and respect for global icons like Mahatma Gandhi, with many calling for an apology from the Russian company.
