After #RIPCartoonNetwork Trends, Channel Says ‘We Are Not Shutting Down’

| Updated: July 10, 2024 18:00

A recent surge in social media activity saw #RIPCartoonNetwork climbing to the top of the trending list. This came after a video released on platform X suggested that Cartoon Network was “dead.” The hashtag ignited a flurry of nostalgic posts from users reminiscing about the channel that shaped many childhoods. Despite the uproar, it’s been clarified that Cartoon Network is not ceasing operations.

The rumour mill went into overdrive following a video posted by ‘Animation Workers Ignited’ on July 9. The clip quickly went viral, amassing over six million views, accompanied by a caption that read: “Cartoon Network is dead?!?! Spread the word about what’s at stake for animation!!! Post about your favorite Cartoon Network shows using #RIPCartoonNetwork.”

The video featured animated characters discussing the state of animation production. One character lamented, “Not anymore. Cartoon Network is essentially dead and other big animation studios are not far behind,” sparking widespread concern among viewers.

The account aimed to shed light on the difficulties faced by animation workers, particularly in light of the pandemic’s impact. The video highlighted that many animators have been unemployed for extended periods, with the industry struggling to bounce back.

Despite animation’s ability to continue remotely during the pandemic, the video criticised major studios for cancelling projects, outsourcing jobs and laying off artists. It accused these studios of prioritising profits and cutting costs at the expense of their workers while executives reap significant benefits.

The video ended with a powerful message: “Animation is under attack. Which side are you on?” This call to action resonated with viewers, prompting widespread discussion about the future of animation and support for industry workers.

Cartoon Network’s Official Statement

In response to the online speculations, Cartoon Network said that they are not shutting down, and are going to remain committed.

“Cartoon Network would like to clarify that there is no truth to the speculation that the network or the studio is shutting down. With a number of recently announced greenlights, we remain committed to continually investing in innovative content that entertains and inspires our viewers across the globe,” the company said in a statement.
