The Supreme Court order, which declined the re-examination but mandated revised results for NEET UG students, had an unexpected effect on four first-rankers in Gujarat.
Several Gujarat students got minus five marks as per the new assessment. The revised results relegated them lower in the rankings. The change would make their selection at the premium institutes difficult.
A total of 67 students from Gujarat scored 720 out of 720 when the NTA declared the NEET UG result. Among these students, one was from Ahmedabad, one from Rajkot, and the other two were from other parts of Gujarat.
As the case was heard in the Supreme Court regarding the paper leak and cheating in the NEET exam, the grace marks of the students were reduced.
NTA published revised results following the Supreme Court order directing the examining body to consider one answer instead of two as correct answers. This reduced the number of marks by five for several students.
The examining agency had given five bonus marks to hundreds of students as they considered two options to a question as correct after the provisional answer key was challenged by the students.
As per the initial results, six students from Gujarat figure in the top 100 in India, with four securing 720 out of 720 marks. Now, the revised results have sent the four at lower numbers in the rank.
Ved Patel from Ahmedabad’s result was changed from 720 marks to 715 marks, making his rank 63rd instead of first. Mandar Soni, also from Ahmedabad, got a rank of 232 instead of 181.
